Carlos Thomas is Doctorate from the University of Cantabria, awarded for his thesis titled “Recycled structural concrete: durability in marine environment and fatigue behavior,” achieving the distinction of cum Laude, Mention of International, Quality Doctorate, and Extraordinary Doctorate Award. Currently, he Professor (with Full Professor Accreditation) at the Laboratory of the Science and Engineering of Materials Group (LADICIM) of the Civil Engineering School at the University of Cantabria, Spain.
His research activities have predominantly focused on the valorization of construction, demolition, and industrial wastes to produce recycled mortars and concrete. Over the past five years, Carlos Thomas has actively participated in 20 R+D+i projects, securing both public and private funding, primarily related to recycled materials. Notably, he has served as the Principal Investigator for 10 of these projects, including three projects funded by governments (exceeding 500,000.00 €), specifically addressing the valorization of steel slag and the development of highly efficient concrete utilizing recycled aggregates and steel fibers.
Carlos Thomas is the author of more than 75 papers in indexed JCR international journals, with a majority falling within the Q1 category, and has acted as the corresponding author for 75% of them. He is the lead author of the paper “Durability of recycled concrete,” which stands among the 10 most cited papers since its publication in Construction and Building Materials (D1). Additionally, it has been certified as one of the 25 most downloaded papers on ScienceDirect and recognized in the 2021 Highly Cited Papers in Web of Science. In the same year, he was the first author of other Highly Cited Papers in Web of Science. In 2013, Carlos Thomas received the award for the best paper of the year in the Road Materials and Pavement Design journal, Taylor & Francis.
Having successfully supervised 8 doctoral theses qualified with cum Laude, Carlos Thomas’s mentees have gone on to achieve significant roles in academia and industry, including positions at the University of Cantabria, University of Burgos, INGECID company, Universidad de Tamaulipas, and Jasmmin Eng.
He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Building Engineering (Q1, ELSEVIER) and he has conducted research internships at various international institutions, including the Josep Fourier University of Grenoble, France; the Federal University of São Joäo in Rei, Brazil; the University of Lisbon, Portugal; and the Instituto Superior Técnico of Lisbon, Portugal. Additionally, he gained valuable industry experience through internships at Bosch-Siemens in Santander, Mercedes-Benz in Vitoria, and DaimlerChrysler in Stuttgart, Germany, supported by the Leonardo Scholarship grant.

With an extensive academic journey spanning across multiple countries, including the US, France, Denmark, and Pakistan, Prof. Waheed Afzal is working at the University of Aberdeen where he has dedicated my academic career to the fields of sustainable process engineering, environmental protection, safety, and clean energy.
His research primarily focuses on developing sustainable solutions to environmental challenges including carbon capture and utilization, waste valorization, wastewater treatment, and biofuels. Through my research, He aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.
Alongside his research, he takes great pride in mentoring and educating the next generation of engineers. By emphasizing the practical application of engineering principles, he equips his students with the skills and knowledge necessary to tackle real-world environmental sustainability challenges.
He has successfully supervised 10 PhDs, published over 75 research manuscripts in leading journals or field conferences. He is member of the Senate of the University of Aberdeen, Member of the University Education Committee and Lead of MSc studies in advanced chemical engineering and in process safety at the University of Aberdeen. He am the Chartered Chemical Engineer, Chartered Scientist, Fellow of Institution of Chemical Engineers and Fellow of the Higher education Academy.

Dr. Khairunisa Muthusamy is a distinguished Associate Professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah, where she has dedicated over two decades to advancing both teaching and research. She earned her PhD in Civil Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2009, and since then, her pioneering work in eco-friendly concrete has set new benchmarks in the field. She has served as Head of Department of Structure and Material at Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology for 2 years. Currently, she is a research fellow at Centre of Sustainability of Mineral & Resource Recovery Technology. Her groundbreaking research focuses on harnessing local waste materials, particularly from the palm oil industry, to develop innovative green lightweight concretes which has been patented. Additionally, Dr. Khairunisa has made significant strides in exploring the reuse of construction and demolition debris, as well as industrial by-products, to enhance cement-based composite materials. Her prolific contributions are evidenced by her extensive portfolio of over 100 published Scopus journal articles and conference papers which are cited over 3364 with an h-index 30 according to Google Scholar database, reflecting her expertise and commitment to advancing sustainable concrete technologies. In year 2022, Stanford University places her as among the top 2% Scientists in the world. Her current research interests include discovery of new supplementary cementitious materials, eco-friendly aggregate for concrete and development of sustainable materials construction material.
